LAB NOTE 02 / Ayurvedic botanicals

Amla, under a modern lens.

How to read a botanical study without over-reading its promise.

What does modern research say about amla?

The botanical identity.

Amla, Phyllanthus emblica, is a familiar Ayurvedic fruit. Its history of use and its chemical composition are different kinds of information; both can inform a question, but neither alone proves a skincare result.

The laboratory evidence.

Fujii and colleagues studied amla extract in cultured human skin fibroblasts. They reported effects on procollagen production and MMP-1. This was an in-vitro study, not a trial of Sushenah formulations on people.

The formulation question.

The preparation, dose, stability and finished product all affect whether a laboratory observation becomes useful in practice. Sushenah includes amla in several formulas; its presence is disclosed without claiming that this cell study proves wrinkle reduction.
